A grant from DOS-MKD

2022 Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF 2022) Grant

AEIF 2022 is a historically dated, alumni-led small-grant competition for teams of at least two qualifying U.S. government exchange alumni. Proposals had to address at least one listed Embassy theme, be submitted by alumni rather than organizations, use a $10,000–$40,000 request, and finish within 12 months; all activities had to occur outside the United States and its territories. The notice’s stated February 1, 2022 deadline conflicts with the structured record’s April 4, 2022 open date, so it should be treated as closed unless the Embassy confirms otherwise. A strong concept would credibly link the team’s exchange-derived skills to an innovative public-service response under a named North Macedonia-focused theme.

Plain-English explanation

Plain-English explanation

Editorial analysis

What the funder is trying to accomplish

AEIF funds alumni of U.S. government exchange programs to expand on skills gained during their exchanges and design and implement innovative solutions to global challenges facing their communities. For AEIF 2022, the Embassy framed its priorities around inclusive democracy and rule of law, Euro-Atlantic integration, and a stronger, more diversified economy in North Macedonia.

Editorial analysis

Strong-fit project signals

The submitting team includes at least two qualifying exchange alumni, and the proposal is submitted by those alumni rather than by a partner organization. The project explicitly addresses a listed theme, such as business transparency and the investment climate; green-economy or eco-friendly entrepreneurship; media and digital literacy; AI and cybersecurity; energy cooperation and security; or participation, inclusion, and leadership of women, minorities, and other underrepresented groups. The concept makes a credible connection between skills gained through the alumni team’s exchange experience and an innovative response to a community challenge. The work plan keeps all activities outside the United States and its territories and completes the proposed program within 12 months. The request is within the stated $10,000–$40,000 award range; the proposal does not depend on mandatory cost share, because cost share is not required.

Editorial analysis

What reviewers may prioritize

No formal review criteria, scoring weights, or evaluation rubric are included in the supplied packet. It is reasonable to infer that eligibility compliance, named-theme alignment, a plausible link to alumni exchange-derived skills, an innovative community-facing solution, and a feasible 12-month plan would matter because these are explicit program conditions or purposes; their relative weight is unknown.
