Plain-English explanation

Plain-English explanation

This is a potential fit for eligible nonprofit research/education organizations, accredited U.S.-campus two- or four-year IHEs, and federally recognized Tribal Nations proposing work that develops new knowledge in computing, communications, or information science and engineering. Position the work within a named Future CoRe area and size it to the stated project guidance, but verify the controlling award limits because the description and structured funding record conflict. Review NSF Publication 25-543 and confirm the deadline cutoff before committing to submission.

Editorial analysis

What the funder is trying to accomplish

NSF CISE supports research and education projects that develop new knowledge in computing, communications, and information science and engineering through the named Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) programs, including AF, CIF, CSR, CER, CPS, FET, HCC, III, NeTS, RI, and SHF.

Editorial analysis

Strong-fit project signals

The submitting entity is a qualifying nonprofit research- or education-associated organization, an accredited two- or four-year IHE with a U.S. campus, or a federally recognized Tribal Nation. The project develops new knowledge in computing, communications, or information science and engineering. The work can be credibly described within one or more of the named Future CoRe program areas. The proposed duration and budget are commensurate with the work and fit the description’s stated project guidance of up to four years and up to $1,000,000, subject to resolving conflicting funding data.

Editorial analysis

What reviewers may prioritize

The supplied evidence does not provide formal NSF review criteria or a reviewer rubric. It is reasonable, but only inferred, that reviewers will need to understand the proposed contribution to new knowledge, its relationship to a Future CoRe area, and whether its scope and budget are commensurate with the work. These are not confirmed scoring factors.

What this grant funds

The NSF CISE Directorate supports research and education projects that develop new knowledge in all aspects of computing, communications, and information science and engineering through the following Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) programs:

Algorithmic Foundations (AF) program; Communications and Information Foundations (CIF) program; Computer Systems Research (CSR) program; Computing Education Research (CER) program; Cyber-Physical System Foundations and Connected Communities (CPS) program; Foundations of Emerging Technologies (FET) program; Human-Centered Computing (HCC) program; Information Integration and Informatics (III) program; Networking Technology and Systems (NeTS) program; Robust Intelligence (RI) program; and Software and Hardware Foundations (SHF) program;

The CISE Future Computing Research program anticipates a portfolio of awards with a range of budgets and durations, including projects of smaller scope. Project durations and budgets must be commensurate with the scope of the proposed work up to the maximum limit of $1,000,000 with a duration up to 4 years. Typical projects are approximately $150,000 to $250,000 per year and are 3 to 4 years in duration. Projects are discouraged from exceeding $300,000 in any single year. Estimated program budget, number of awards, and average award size/duration are subject to the availability of funds.
